Otto Uppendahl

Otto was born to Herman and Augusta (Kaldowski) on July 17, 1893. He would have two siblings (William and Martha) and they lived on a farm near White, SD. Herman passed away in 1910 and Augusta in 1921. After the war, Otto married Lena Wohne on February 25, 1920. They had two children - a daughter who died in infancy and a son, Douglas.

Provost Guard

Provost Guard duties during WWI included suppressing marauding, preserving good order, preventing straggling, and supervising hotels and places of resort. The Provost-Marshall was responsible for maintaining security and enforcing military law. The Provost Guard had a separate chain of command from regular and volunteer troops.

Also, their duties included making searches, seizures and arrests; custodial duties for deserters and prisoners of war; and issuing passes and taking complaints from citizens.
