Henry H. Davis was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, May 15, 1814. He lived for a time before his marriage, with his brother Peter. In 1840 he and Hannah Ford Shaffer were married by William Woodburn in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. A short time afterward they moved to Jackson County, Ohio. Their children (Sarah Elizabeth 1842, Charles William 1844, Alexander Warwick 1848, and John Wesley 1852) were born in Liberty Township, Jackson County.

In 1860 they moved with another family, George Taylor's, to a farm in (Henry Twp, Henry Co.) Indiana and lived there about four years, then moved on to (Rock or Richland Co.) Wisconsin.

Henry was a carpenter and cabinet maker and worked at his trade until until he enlisted, in February 1865, soon after they moved to Wisconsin, in the 44th Wisconsin Infantry, War of the Rebellion.

He gave his life for his country and died in a hospital at Tennessee, March 14, 1865. His brother Jacob lived with the family in Indiana and Wisconsin until Henry's death.

His family then moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota, where his brother Peter had moved in 1855. Alex and Peter's son Philip left Spring Valley on April 2, 1878, with teams and wagons, and filed claims of 320 acres each in Brookings County, SD. Henry's wife and son Charles moved there in December 1879, and took claims of 160 acres each. Henry's wife lived there until her death, November 3, 1897. She was buried in Fountain Cemetery, Brooking County, SD. Henry was buried at Nashville, Tennessee.
