Definition and Rank Structure

S2C, or Seaman 2nd Class, is a rank in the U.S. Navy that denotes an enlisted sailor who has completed initial training and is above Seaman Recruit (SR) but below Seaman (SN) in the hierarchy. It is considered an entry-level position for sailors who are beginning their naval careers and may still be in the process of learning a specific rating or specialty.

Historical Context

During World War II, the rank of Seaman 2nd Class was used to designate sailors who had graduated from boot camp and were no longer apprentices or recruits. Prior to 1944, pay grades and authority levels for non-rated sailors were not standardized, so a Seaman 2nd Class could have different pay compared to other technical or physically demanding positions at the same level. After January 1, 1944, pay grades were standardized across the Navy, making S2C a clearly defined rank in both authority and compensation.
