The US Army Air Force played a crucial role in the North African campaign during World War II. They were involved in various operations, including the invasion of Algeria and French Morocco in November 1942, and continued to operate in the Mediterranean theater until the war's end. The 12th Air Force, activated on August 20, 1942, was instrumental in the invasion and served with the Northwest African Air Forces from February to December 1943. They participated in significant campaigns such as Air Combat, EAME Theater, and Tunisia. The 12th Air Force's operations in North Africa were marked by close cooperation between the Army and Air Force, leading to the development of close air support doctrine and practice.
