Born as the third child in a family with nine children, Matt grew up in and around White and Brookings, SD. After completing school, Matt moved to Little Rock, IA and worked as a farm hand. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and worked as an airplane mechanic until 1944. Matt was married to Elvera Stoffel in 1946 and they had three children: Mary Jo, Rita, and Thomas.
